2 Samuel 17:26

So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.

2 Samuel 17:26 (KJV)

Second Samuel 17:26 records that Absalom and the Israelites who followed him crossed the Jordan and camped in Gilead. This came after Ahithophel’s counsel was overthrown by Hushai’s advice, which the text attributes to God’s appointment (2 Samuel 17:14). Gilead was a region east of the Jordan, belonging to Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, known for its fertile land and strategic importance.

The verse shows the scale of the rebellion against David: the forces arrayed against him are called “Israel,” indicating that the nation was largely united under Absalom’s usurpation. This highlights the depth of the crisis David faced, a crisis that was part of the consequences of his own sin, yet also under God’s sovereign overruling. The location in Gilead sets the stage for the battle in the forest of Ephraim (2 Samuel 18:6), which, despite its name, was in Gilead, not in the tribe of Ephraim west of the Jordan.

The subsequent narrative (2 Samuel 18) shows the defeat of Absalom’s forces and his death, demonstrating the futility of rebellion against God’s anointed king. This verse is a pivotal moment in the narrative, moving from counsel to conflict, and it underscores the seriousness of Absalom’s revolt and the impending judgment.

Trust in God’s sovereignty: despite political maneuvering and shifting alliances, God’s plans were not thwarted. Ultimately, David would become the undisputed king over all Israel, as God had promised. Even amid human schemes, God’s purposes prevailed, leading to David’s establishment as king. This passage reminds us of the intricacies of human relationships and the importance of divine guidance.

When studying the Bible, this passage serves as a reminder that God’s overarching plan is fulfilled even through turbulent events. The rebellion against David, though severe, was used by God to accomplish His purposes, and the same sovereign care extends to believers today.
