2 Samuel 17:27
And it came to passe when Dauid was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the sonne of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the sonne of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite, of Rogelim, 2 Samuel 17:27 (KJV)
This verse is part of the narrative in 2 Samuel that describes the events surrounding Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David. In this particular verse, we are introduced to three individuals who come to support and provide for David while he is in Mahanaim, a city on the eastern side of the Jordan River.
Shobi the son of Nahash: Shobi is described as the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the children of Ammon. Nahash was a former king of the Ammonites who had previously been an adversary of Israel (see 1 Samuel 11). Nahash was likely a previous king of the Ammonites. It is interesting to note that Nahash is mentioned in relation to David’s earlier interactions with the Ammonites, though the specific event of Nahash showing kindness to David is not detailed in Scripture. Shobi’s support for David during this difficult time shows a continuing relationship between David and some members of the Ammonite community.
Machir the son of Ammiel: Machir is mentioned as the son of Ammiel from Lod, a town east of the Jordan River. Lodebar was a place located east of the Jordan River. Machir’s assistance to David during this period demonstrates his loyalty and support for the king.
Barzillai the Gileadite: Barzillai is described as a Gileadite from Rogelim. Gilead was a region east of the Jordan River known for its rich pastures. Barzillai’s provision of supplies for David and his men indicates his willingness to aid the king in his time of need.
These three individuals, Shobi, Machir, and Barzillai, demonstrate their loyalty and support for David during a critical period when he is facing rebellion from his own son. Their assistance reflects the loyalty and respect that many people held for David, even in difficult times.
