2 Samuel 23:38

Ira an Ithrite, Gareb an Ithrite,

2 Samuel 23:38 (KJV)

This verse closes the list of David’s mighty men in 2 Samuel 23. Ira and Gareb are named together, both called Ithrites. The Ithrites were a family or clan, likely descended from Jether, a descendant of Caleb (1 Chronicles 2:53). This places them within the tribe of Judah, the tribe of David and the promised Messiah. The list of mighty men in 2 Samuel 23:8-39 celebrates those who supported David’s God-given kingship. Their loyalty helped secure the kingdom God had promised to David.

The word “Ithrite” points to a family connection, not a famous deed. Ira and Gareb are honoured simply because they belonged to this clan and served faithfully. Their names appear without any record of their exploits. This shows that God values every faithful servant, even when their story is not written in detail. Their inclusion is a quiet but real honour. The brevity of the verse does not diminish its significance. It is part of the inspired Word of God, profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).

The Ithrites’ connection to Judah reminds us that God works through families and tribes to fulfil His promises. Their service was part of a larger story of God’s covenant faithfulness. The genealogical detail also affirms the historical reliability of the biblical record. God’s redemptive history often moves through ordinary families, showing that He values heritage and community. The faithfulness of these warriors points forward to the perfect faithfulness of Christ, the ultimate Son of David.

Most believers serve God without public recognition. Ira and Gareb teach us that faithful service matters, even when no one records it. God sees the quiet work of every person who supports His kingdom. We should not measure our worth by fame or visible results. Instead, we can serve with the same loyalty these warriors showed to David. Their example encourages us to be faithful in our own place, trusting that God values our contribution. Whether our role is prominent or hidden, our service is meaningful to Him.

This brief verse reminds us that God remembers His people. He knows each name and each act of service. The Ithrites were ordinary people, yet their names are preserved in Scripture. This encourages us to be faithful, even when no one notices. Their example points us to Christ, who is perfectly faithful in all things. The recording of these names signifies that God values the service of all His people, not just the most famous. Let us take comfort in this truth and continue to serve with loyalty and devotion.
