2 Samuel 7:28

And now, O Lord God, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

2 Samuel 7:28 (KJV)

This verse closes King David’s prayer after God spoke through the prophet Nathan. David wanted to build a house for God, but God promised to build a house for David instead, meaning a lasting dynasty. In 2 Samuel 7:18-29, David responds with humility and gratitude. Here he affirms who God is and what God has said.

David calls the Lord “that God,” the only true God, the Lord of hosts who rules over all. He then declares that God’s words are true, meaning faithful and completely reliable. God always performs what He promises. David also calls the promise “goodness,” showing that it is a gift of grace, not something he earned. The promise of an enduring house and kingdom was given to David as a servant, and David receives it with wonder.

This promise to David points forward to Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose kingdom will never end. In the New Testament, the angel Gabriel tells Mary that the Lord will give Jesus the throne of His father David (Luke 1:32-33). David’s prayer models how believers can pray God’s promises back to Him, as he does in verse 25, trusting that God will do what He has said.

Like David, we can acknowledge God as the one true God and trust His word completely. When we face delays or doubts, we can remind God of His promises in prayer, not to inform Him but to strengthen our own faith. We should respond to God’s goodness with humility and gratitude, knowing that His promises are sure.

  • Acknowledge God’s sovereignty and truthfulness in daily life.

  • Pray Scripture back to God, especially when fulfillment seems slow.

  • Receive God’s promises as unearned goodness, not rewards for merit.

David’s prayer ends with confident trust. He does not demand proof; he rests on God’s character. This verse invites us to examine our own confidence in God’s word. Do we treat His promises as true and certain? David’s example encourages us to worship God for who He is and to rely on His faithfulness in every circumstance.
