2 Timothy 3:15

Listen to this article

“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

Context:Before diving into a verse, it’s important to understand the context. The book of 2 Timothy was written by the apostle Paul to his young protégé, Timothy, who was serving as a pastor in Ephesus. Paul wrote this letter while he was imprisoned, and it contains his final instructions and encouragement to Timothy.

Knowing the Holy Scriptures:In this verse, Paul commends Timothy for his knowledge of the holy scriptures from childhood. Timothy’s mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois, are mentioned earlier in the letter as women of faith who taught Timothy the Scriptures (2 Timothy 1:5). The “holy scriptures” refer to the Old Testament writings that Timothy would have grown up with, particularly the Hebrew Scriptures or the Tanakh.

The Power of the Scriptures:Paul emphasizes the transformative power of the Scriptures. He states that they are “able to make thee wise unto salvation.” The Scriptures contain the revelation of God’s plan for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. By studying the Scriptures, Timothy gained wisdom and understanding about God’s redemptive work and how to receive salvation.

Salvation through Faith in Christ Jesus:Paul highlights that salvation is obtained through faith in Christ Jesus. The Scriptures reveal the person and work of Jesus, His death and resurrection, and the means by which people can be saved through faith in Him. The Old Testament Scriptures pointed forward to the coming of the Messiah, and the New Testament reveals the fulfillment of those promises in Jesus Christ.

Application:This verse reminds us of the importance of knowing and studying the Scriptures. The Bible is God’s inspired Word, and it contains the message of salvation and the wisdom we need to live according to His will. Like Timothy, we can start learning the Scriptures from a young age, and it is beneficial for people of all ages to study and meditate on God’s Word.

  • Importance of Teaching:This verse also highlights the vital role of parents, mentors, and church leaders in teaching the Scriptures to the next generation. Just as Timothy’s mother and grandmother passed down their faith to him, we have a responsibility to teach and disciple others in the knowledge of the Scriptures and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In conclusion, 2 Timothy 3:15 reminds us of the power and significance of the holy scriptures in our lives. The Scriptures make us wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Let us commit ourselves to studying and meditating on God’s Word, and let us pass on the knowledge of the Scriptures to the next generation.
