2 Timothy 4:19
Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.
2 Timothy 4:19 (KJV)
Context
The book of 2 Timothy is one of the pastoral letters written by the apostle Paul to his disciple Timothy. In this letter, Paul encourages Timothy in his ministry, urges him to remain faithful to the gospel, and prepares him for his future responsibilities. This verse is part of Paul’s final greetings, showing his care for specific believers even as he faces the end of his life.
Meaning
Paul instructs Timothy to greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. The word “salute” means to greet or convey warm regards. This is not a casual mention; it is a deliberate act of acknowledgment and affection. Paul wants these faithful workers to know they are remembered and valued.
Prisca and Aquila
Prisca (also known as Priscilla) and Aquila were a married couple who played an important role in the early church. They were tentmakers by trade and became friends and ministry partners of Paul. They had been forced to leave Rome under the decree of Emperor Claudius (Acts 18:2), and Paul later left them at Ephesus. Their repeated mention in Paul’s letters indicates they were still active in service, opening their home for the gathering of believers and partnering in the gospel.
The household of Onesiphorus
Onesiphorus is mentioned earlier in 2 Timothy 1:16-18, where Paul recalls that he was not ashamed of Paul’s chains, diligently sought him in Rome, and refreshed him. The greeting to his “household” suggests Paul’s continued care for his family, possibly indicating that Onesiphorus was away or had died, but his family remained a focus of Paul’s concern. This shows Paul’s gratitude and ongoing connection to those who had supported him.
Application
The importance of hospitality: Prisca and Aquila’s willingness to open their home for the fellowship of believers is a reminder of the value of hospitality in the Christian community. It reflects the spirit of generosity and love that should characterise believers today.
Faithfulness in serving: Prisca and Aquila’s continued service to God’s work is an example of faithfulness and dedication. Despite facing challenges and being uprooted from their home, they remained committed to the cause of Christ.
The power of support: Onesiphorus’ acts of kindness towards Paul, even in the face of potential persecution, serve as a reminder of the impact of offering support to those in need. It demonstrates the importance of standing with fellow believers during difficult times.
Reflection
Paul, even in his final days, prioritizes acknowledging and honoring his fellow workers and their families. This verse encourages us to cultivate a spirit of hospitality, remain faithful in our service to God, and extend support and kindness to others in the Christian community.
