Numbers 18:26
Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the Lord, even a tenth part of the tithe.
Numbers 18:26 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In Numbers 18, God gives specific duties to the priests and Levites. The Levites received no land inheritance like the other tribes. Instead, God gave them the tithes of Israel as their inheritance (Numbers 18:24). This verse tells Moses to instruct the Levites about what they must do with those tithes.
Meaning
God commands the Levites to offer a heave offering from the tithes they receive. A tithe is a tenth part of income or produce set apart for God’s work. The heave offering was lifted up before the Lord as a sign of His ownership. Here, the Levites must give a tenth of the tithe, meaning one percent of the people’s produce. Even those who serve in spiritual roles are not exempt from giving back to God. This command is specific and practical, showing that obedience matters in the details of worship.
Biblical connections
The following verses explain that this heave offering is counted to the Levites as if it were grain from the threshing floor or wine from the winepress (Numbers 18:27-28). This means the Levites’ giving is as real and valuable as the giving of other Israelites. The principle is clear: all who receive from God are called to return a portion to Him, regardless of their role or income. The tithe system also provided for the Levites so they could serve God and the community, showing that God’s design includes support for those who minister.
Application
The Levites depended on the tithes for their daily needs, yet they still gave back to God. This teaches faithful stewardship. We are managers of what God entrusts to us, not owners. Giving back to God is an act of worship and gratitude, acknowledging that everything we have comes from Him. The Levites obeyed this command and trusted God’s provision. Their example encourages us to obey God’s instructions and trust His faithfulness.
This passage also reminds us of the importance of generosity. In our lives, we can practice generosity by supporting those who serve in ministry and by giving to those in need. Giving is not only for those who have abundance; it is a consistent practice for all of God’s people. The heave offering was a tangible expression of trust and devotion, and our giving can be the same.
Reflection
God’s provision always includes the means to give back to Him. The Levites received tithes, and from those tithes they offered a tenth. This shows that giving is not about a percentage alone but about a heart of gratitude and obedience. When we honor God with our resources, we acknowledge His sovereignty and express our trust in Him. The command is specific and practical, reminding us that faithful stewardship involves careful, deliberate giving. As we reflect on this verse, we can ask ourselves how we can honor God with what He has given us, knowing that all we have is a gift from Him.
