Numbers 18:25
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Numbers 18:25 (KJV)
Context
This verse is a brief but vital link in Israel’s story. God speaks directly to Moses, who then delivers the message to the Levites. The Levites were the tribe set apart to serve in the tabernacle and assist the priests. They received no large land inheritance like the other tribes, so God gave them the tithes of the people as their provision.
Meaning
The words “the LORD spake unto Moses” show that the instructions come from God Himself. Moses is the trusted mediator between God and Israel. This verse prepares the reader for the next command: the Levites must offer a heave offering from the tithes they receive. A heave offering was a portion lifted up and given to God, showing that even what is given for service still belongs to Him.
Biblical connections
In Numbers 18:26-29, God tells the Levites to give a tenth of the tithe as an offering to Him. This is often called the “tithe of the tithe.” It was to be the best part, like the finest grain or wine, and it was given to Aaron the priest. This pattern reminds us that all blessings come from God and should be honored with our best.
Application
Christians are not under the Mosaic Law, but this passage still teaches us to give back to God from what we receive. We should give willingly and offer our best, not what is left over. The Levites’ example also shows that those who serve God are to be supported by the community, a principle seen in the New Testament.
Reflection
God still speaks through His Word and His appointed servants. We can trust that His instructions are for our good and for orderly worship. Let us respond with grateful hearts, dedicating our resources and ourselves to Him.
