Numbers 18:24
But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the Lord, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
Numbers 18:24 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 18 records God’s instructions to Aaron and the Levites about their duties and privileges in the tabernacle. The Levites were chosen to assist the priests and were not given a portion of land like the other tribes. Instead, God appointed the tithes of the people as their provision. This verse concludes that instruction by declaring that the tithes are the Levites’ inheritance.
Meaning
The tithe was the tenth part of the produce of the land, offered by the Israelites as gratitude to God for giving them the land and making it fruitful. It was also an acknowledgment that God is the true owner of the land. The term “heave offering” refers to a portion lifted or raised up before the Lord, set apart for His service. Here, God gives these tithes to the Levites as their inheritance, meaning their portion and provision come from Him through the people’s offerings.
God also states that the Levites would have no inheritance among the children of Israel. This means they would not receive land as their possession, unlike the other tribes. Their inheritance was the Lord Himself and the tithes He ordained for them. This arrangement allowed them to focus entirely on their service in the tabernacle without the distractions of farming or land management.
Biblical connections
The preceding verse, Numbers 18:23, calls this a statute for ever throughout their generations. The following verse, Numbers 18:26, shows that the Levites themselves were not exempt from giving back to God. When they received the tithes, they were to offer a heave offering to the Lord, even a tenth part of the tithe. This demonstrates that the principle of giving to God applied to all, including those who served Him.
Application
God established a system to provide for those who served Him in the tabernacle. He instructed the Israelites to bring their tithes to support the Levites. This teaches the importance of providing for those who are called to serve God and minister to His people. Believers today can apply this by supporting those who devote their lives to spiritual service.
The Levites’ reliance on the tithes demonstrates trusting in God’s provision. They had no land, but they trusted that God would meet their needs through the offerings of the people. This reminds us to trust in God’s faithfulness to provide for us as we serve Him, even when we do not see an immediate source of supply.
The Levites’ dedication, despite having no land, highlights sacrificial service. They set aside personal possessions and privileges for the sake of serving God and His people. Serving God often involves sacrifices and requires a wholehearted commitment. This verse encourages believers to prioritize God’s work and rely on Him for their needs.
Reflection
Consider how you view your own resources. The tithe was an act of worship, acknowledging God as the giver of all things. The Levites received from the people, but they also gave back to God from what they received. This pattern reminds us that all we have comes from God and should be used for His glory. Reflect on whether your giving and service flow from gratitude and trust in God’s provision.
