Posted on 3 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.”

Context:Joshua 10 recounts the account of Joshua and the Israelites’ conquest of the southern Canaanite kings. The chapter begins with the miraculous defeat of the Amorite coalition as the Lord fought for Israel by throwing hailstones on their enemies. Joshua then commands the sun and moon to stand still, extending the daylight to complete the victory. In verse 21, we see the aftermath of the battle, where the Israelites return to Joshua at Makkedah unharmed.

Victory through divine intervention:Joshua 10 is a remarkable account of God’s intervention and faithfulness to His people. The defeat of the Amorite kings was a direct result of God’s supernatural intervention on behalf of Israel. The hailstones and the extended daylight were extraordinary signs of God’s power, demonstrating that He fights for His people and ensures their victory.

Unity among God’s people:Joshua 10:21 highlights the unity and harmony among the children of Israel. After the battle, not a single person spoke against any of the Israelites. This unity was crucial for their success in conquering the Promised Land. The absence of internal strife and discord among the Israelites allowed them to focus on their mission and stand strong against external enemies.

God’s faithfulness in protecting His people:The fact that none of the Israelites were harmed or criticised by their fellow countrymen demonstrates God’s faithfulness in protecting His chosen people. Even in the midst of intense battles and conquests, God provided an environment of peace and safety within the Israelite camp.

Application to believers today:The account in Joshua 10:21 teaches us several valuable lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of the power of God to intervene in our lives. Just as God fought for the Israelites, He is willing and able to fight for us in our battles and challenges. Secondly, it emphasises the importance of unity and harmony among believers. When we stand together in unity, we become a strong force against the spiritual opposition we face. Lastly, the passage encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness to protect us and provide peace even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

In conclusion, Joshua 10:21 showcases God’s supernatural intervention on behalf of the Israelites and highlights the unity and peace among His people. It reminds us of God’s power, the importance of unity among believers, and His faithfulness to protect and provide for His children.
