Joshua 10:21

And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

Joshua 10:21 (KJV)

Joshua 10 tells how Israel defeated a coalition of Amorite kings who attacked Gibeon because of its treaty with Israel. Joshua led the army on an all-night march, and the Lord fought for Israel by throwing great hailstones from heaven that killed more enemies than the sword. He also made the sun and moon stand still so the battle could finish. The five kings fled and hid in a cave at Makkedah, where Joshua sealed them in. After the main fighting ended and the remnant of the enemy had fled into fortified cities, all the people returned safely to Joshua at the camp.

The phrase “in peace” means sound and well, with no one killed, missing, or wounded. The second half of the verse, “none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel,” shows that no one dared to curse, reproach, or speak ill of Israel. This silence was a sign of the terror that had fallen on the surrounding nations because of what God had done for Israel. The people’s safe return and the silencing of opposition were direct results of divine intervention, not merely military skill.

This verse sets the stage for the public execution of the five kings in Joshua 10:22-27, which further demonstrates God’s judgment on the Canaanite kings and His faithfulness to Israel. The complete protection of Israel in battle echoes God’s promise to fight for His people, as seen throughout the conquest of the Promised Land. The hailstones and the halted sun show that God uses both nature and time to accomplish His purposes, and the peace at Makkedah confirms that His power secures every victory.

This account teaches that God is able to intervene powerfully in our lives. Just as He fought for Israel, He is willing and able to fight for us in our battles and challenges. It also emphasizes the importance of unity and harmony among believers. When we stand together, we become a strong force against spiritual opposition. The verse encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness to protect us and provide peace even in difficult circumstances.

Consider the peace that comes from knowing God is in control. The Israelites returned to camp without a single casualty, and their enemies were silenced. This peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of God’s protection. Reflect on areas where you need to trust God to fight for you, and ask Him to give you unity with fellow believers and confidence in His care.
