Joshua 10:23
And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
Joshua 10:23 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 10 records Israel’s campaign against a coalition of Amorite kings. These rulers joined forces to attack Gibeon, which had made peace with Israel. God fought for Israel with a miraculous hailstorm, and the enemy fled. The five kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon hid in a cave at Makkedah to escape. Their names are listed individually, showing that each ruler was known and none escaped God’s notice.
Meaning
Joshua’s men obeyed his command and brought the kings out of the cave. Each king is named, showing the completeness of the victory. The cave, once a place of refuge, became a place of exposure. This public display proved that no enemy could hide from God’s purposes. The act was not merely a military tactic; it demonstrated God’s judgment on the Canaanite nations and gave Israel a visible sign that God was fighting for them.
Biblical connections
The capture of these kings fulfilled God’s promise to give Israel the land. In Joshua 10:24-25, Joshua tells his commanders not to fear, for the LORD will do this to all their enemies. This event also points to Christ, who leads God’s people to victory over spiritual enemies, though this picture must not be pressed too far. The certainty of God’s promises and the importance of obedience to His appointed leader are clear throughout this narrative.
Application
God’s people can trust Him to overcome formidable opposition. Joshua’s obedience and courage teach believers to rely on God’s guidance even when challenges seem overwhelming. The defeat of these powerful kings reminds us that God is faithful to His covenant promises. No enemy, however strong, can hide from God’s purposes or thwart His deliverance.
Reflection
Consider what “caves” you hide in when facing fear or failure. God sees and brings hidden things to light. He calls you to stand firm, not in your own strength, but in His. As Joshua encouraged Israel, be strong and courageous, for the LORD fights for you.
