Heshbon with her suburbs, Jazer with her suburbs; four cities in all.

Context

This verse belongs to the book of Joshua, which records how the Israelites, led by Joshua after Moses died, took possession of the Promised Land. In Joshua 21, the land is divided among the tribes. The Levites, set apart for priestly service, received no single territory. Instead, they were given cities scattered through other tribes’ lands, with surrounding pastures for their livestock. These cities became their homes and centers for teaching the law and performing religious duties.

Joshua 21:39 names Heshbon and Jazer, each with its suburbs, and says “four cities in all.” The number four includes two cities listed in the previous verse, so together they form a group of four Levitical cities from the tribe of Gad.

Meaning

Heshbon was once the royal city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and had been given to the Reubenites (Numbers 21:26; Joshua 13:17). Jazer lay in the same region east of the Jordan. Both cities, though formerly enemy strongholds, became places where God’s servants could live and serve. This shows God’s faithfulness in giving Israel the land He promised, including cities once held by their enemies. The careful listing of each city and its suburbs shows the precision and orderliness of God’s distribution, reflecting His attention to detail and His care for all the tribes.

Application

God provided for the Levites’ practical needs, ensuring they had homes and pastureland. This teaches that those who minister before God are to be supported by the community. It also reminds believers that God supplies what is needed for faithful service, even from places that once seemed opposed to Him. The principle extends to us: God sees our needs and provides for them, often in unexpected ways. We can trust His provision and care, knowing that He is faithful to His promises.
