Joshua 21:40
So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.
Joshua 21:40 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records how Israel entered the Promised Land under Joshua after Moses died. Joshua 21 describes the special allocation of cities to the Levites, the tribe set apart for God’s service. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no large territory of their own. Instead, they were given cities scattered throughout the tribal lands, with pasturelands for their livestock.
The Levites were descendants of Levi, one of Jacob’s twelve sons. God chose them to serve at the tabernacle and later the temple. Their duties included teaching the Law, leading worship, and caring for the people’s spiritual needs. Within Levi, there were three main divisions: the Gershonites, the Kohathites, and the Merarites. This verse focuses on the Merarites, the last of these families to receive their portion.
Meaning
The verse states that the remaining families of the Levites, the children of Merari, received twelve cities by lot. The word “lot” is important. Casting lots was a way the Israelites sought God’s decision. So the allocation was not by human choice or favor, but by divine direction. The Merarites received four cities from each of three tribes: Zebulun, Reuben, and Gad. This distribution shows that God provided for every Levitical family, including the last one mentioned.
The twelve cities were not just places to live. They gave the Merarites a stable home and resources to carry out their service. The Levites owned no single territory, yet they were never forgotten. God made sure they had dwelling places among the people they served. This fulfilled His promise to provide for those dedicated to Him.
Biblical connections
The broader passage in Joshua 21:41-45 records that all Levitical cities totaled forty-eight, and that God gave Israel rest and fulfilled every promise He had made. This verse is part of that larger picture of God’s faithfulness. The careful listing of each family’s cities shows that God’s provision is complete and orderly. No family was left out.
Application
God is faithful to provide for those who serve Him. The Levites had no land, yet God gave them homes and resources. We can trust Him to meet our needs, even when our situation seems uncertain.
Service to God is valuable. The Levites’ dedication to worship and teaching was central to Israel’s life. We are also called to use our gifts to serve God and His people, knowing He values that work.
God’s plans are orderly and inclusive. The Merarites were the last family listed, but they received a full portion. No one is overlooked in God’s purposes. We should remember that every believer has a place and a role in His kingdom.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God sees and provides for every person who belongs to Him. The Merarites were not the most prominent family, yet their needs were fully met. Their inheritance came by lot, showing that God directed the outcome. When we face uncertainty about our own provision or place, we can rest in the same God who gave the Merarites their twelve cities. His promises are reliable, and His care extends to every detail of our lives.
