Joshua 21:37

Kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs; four cities.

Joshua 21:37 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the Israelites entering the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership after Moses’ death. Following the conquest of Canaan, the land was divided among the twelve tribes. Joshua 21 describes the allocation of cities to the Levites, who were set apart for the service of God.

The Levites, being the priestly tribe, did not receive a specific territorial inheritance like the other tribes. Instead, they were given forty-eight cities scattered among the territories of the other tribes, along with surrounding pasturelands for their livestock. These cities served as dwelling places and centers for the Levites to carry out their priestly duties, including teaching the law and offering sacrifices.

In Joshua 21:37, two cities are named: Kedemoth and Mephaath. These were among the four cities allocated to the Levites in this group. Kedemoth, which means “ancient” or “eastern,” was a city in the territory of Reuben. It was near a wilderness of the same name, as noted in Deuteronomy 2:26, where Moses sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon. Mephaath was also located in the region of Reuben.

The verse concludes with “four cities,” referring to the total count for this group, which includes the two preceding cities mentioned in Joshua 21:35-36. Some ancient copies of the Hebrew Bible omit this phrase, but it is present in the Targum, Septuagint, and Syriac versions.

While these cities may not have particular historical or theological significance in themselves, they represent the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promise to provide for the Levites. By giving them cities for dwelling and provisions, God demonstrated His care for His chosen servants and their essential role in the religious life of Israel.

Although Joshua 21:37 appears to be a simple enumeration of cities, it reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It highlights the importance of God’s provision for those called to serve Him. Just as the Levites were given cities for their service, God provides for the needs of His people today. Whether it is physical provision, spiritual sustenance, or guidance in our callings, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to provide.

As believers, we can find encouragement in the example of the Levites. They were set apart for a special purpose and entrusted with the responsibility of leading the people in worship and instruction. In a similar way, we are called to serve God and fulfill our unique roles within the body of Christ. Like the Levites, we can rely on God’s faithfulness and provision as we seek to carry out His purposes.

Joshua 21:37 reveals the allocation of cities to the Levites as part of their inheritance in the Promised Land. While the verse may seem straightforward, it reminds us of God’s faithfulness in providing for His chosen servants and highlights the importance of relying on Him for our own needs and callings.
