And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

Context

After Israel entered the Promised Land, Joshua divided the territory among the twelve tribes. This verse records part of that division, giving two cities from the tribe of Gad to the Levites. Gad descended from Jacob and Zilpah, Leah’s maid, and settled east of the Jordan River in Gilead. The Levites did not receive a large inheritance like the other tribes, so God commanded that they be given cities with pasturelands for their needs.

Meaning

Ramoth in Gilead was set apart as a city of refuge. Such cities protected a person who had killed someone accidentally, shielding them from the avenger until a fair trial. It was the sixth and final city of refuge listed in this account. Mahanaim, also in Gad’s land, lay near the Jabbok River and served the Levites with its surrounding pastures.

Biblical connections

Mahanaim is where Jacob met angels, as recorded in Genesis 32:1-2. The same list of Levitical cities appears in 1 Chronicles 6:80, confirming the consistency of these assignments. The provision of cities with suburbs fulfilled God’s command to care for the Levites, who had no territorial inheritance.

Application

God’s care for both the Levites and those who needed refuge shows His concern for justice and mercy. Believers today can find safety in Christ, who is the ultimate refuge for sinners. The careful allocation of cities reminds us that God keeps His promises to His people.
