1 Samuel 15:10

Listen to this article

“Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,”

1 Samuel 15:10 is a transitional verse in the larger narrative of King Saul’s disobedience and the subsequent consequences he faces. To gain a better understanding of this verse, it is helpful to examine the surrounding context and the events leading up to it.

In the previous verses, Samuel, as a prophet of God, had delivered a clear command from the Lord to Saul concerning the Amalekites. God instructed Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions, sparing nothing. However, when Saul carried out the mission, he did not fully obey God’s command. He spared the Amalekite king, Agag, and the best of the livestock.

In 1 Samuel 15:10, the Word of the Lord comes to Samuel, the prophet, after Saul’s incomplete obedience. This verse serves as a turning point in the story, where God addresses Samuel to convey His displeasure and announce the consequences of Saul’s disobedience.

From a broader perspective, this verse highlights a crucial aspect of God’s relationship with His people, emphasising the importance of obedience and the consequences of disobedience. Throughout the Bible, God consistently emphasises the significance of following His commands, and the story of Saul serves as a powerful example of the consequences that can result from failing to obey.

1 Samuel 15:10 sets the stage for what follows in the subsequent verses, where Samuel conveys God’s message to Saul, revealing the extent of Saul’s disobedience and the consequences it entails. God rejects Saul as king, highlighting the gravity of his actions and the repercussions they carry not only for Saul but for his kingdom as well.

In summary, 1 Samuel 15:10 marks a critical moment in the story of Saul’s disobedience and the subsequent consequences he faces. It underscores the importance of obedience to God’s commands and serves as a reminder that partial or incomplete obedience is not acceptable in His sight. As we study this verse and the broader narrative, we can learn valuable lessons about the significance of obeying God’s commands and the serious consequences of disobedience.
