2 Kings 9:5

And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.

2 Kings 9:5 (KJV)

This verse places us at Ramoth-gilead, where the captains of Israel’s army are seated together. Jehoram, the son of Ahab and Jezebel, is king in Israel, and the prophet Elisha has just sent a young prophet with a confidential mission. The young man’s arrival and his direct address to Jehu mark the beginning of a divine appointment that will change the nation’s leadership.

The prophet’s words, “I have an errand to thee, O captain,” single out Jehu from the group. Jehu’s reply, “Unto which of all us?” shows his surprise and his desire to know whether the message is truly for him. The prophet’s answer, “To thee, O captain,” confirms that God’s call is personal and specific. This is not a general word for the whole company; it is a direct commission to one man.

The prophet’s errand follows the instruction Elisha gave in 2 Kings 9:1-3, where the young prophet was sent to anoint Jehu as king of Israel. Anointing with oil was a sign that God had chosen a person for a particular office or task. Here, Jehu is set apart to execute judgment on the house of Ahab, a dynasty that had led Israel into idolatry and apostasy. The following verses reveal the full scope of that judgment, including King Jehoram, Jezebel, and all of Ahab’s descendants.

Jehu’s calling reminds us that God works through human agents to accomplish His purposes. He sees the hearts of rulers and holds them accountable for their actions. The personal nature of the prophet’s message also challenges us to consider how God may speak directly to us, calling us to obedience even when the task is difficult or unpopular. Like Jehu, we may not fully understand the purpose at first, but we can trust that God’s direction is specific and intentional.

God’s faithfulness is seen in the fulfilment of His prophetic word. Jehu accomplished the task he was given, and the dynasty of Ahab was completely wiped out, in accordance with the word of the Lord. This account assures us that God’s plans are certain and that He equips those He calls. As we read, we are invited to reflect on our own willingness to follow God’s instructions, even when the path ahead is not fully clear.
