1 Chronicles 9:30

And some of the sons of the priests made the ointment of the spices.

1 Chronicles 9:30 (KJV)

This verse appears in a list of duties assigned to the families who returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. The Chronicler records how worship was restored, showing that God cares about order and faithfulness in His house. The priests were not only leaders in sacrifice but also in the careful preparation of holy things. Their work was part of the larger effort to reestablish proper worship according to God’s commands.

The phrase “sons of the priests” points to the descendants of Aaron, the first high priest. These men were set apart to serve God. The “ointment of the spices” refers to the sacred anointing oil and incense, whose recipe God gave in Exodus 30:22-38. Making it required costly ingredients and exact obedience. This task was not ordinary work; it was a holy duty. The priests were entrusted with this responsibility, showing the holiness and precision required in worship.

Anointing with oil in the Old Testament set apart priests and kings for God’s service. The fragrant spices reminded the people of the sacredness of worship. This priestly work points forward to Jesus Christ, the perfect High Priest, who offers access to God through His own sacrifice. The New Testament also calls believers a “holy priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9), meaning every Christian shares in this calling to serve God. As a “royal priesthood,” believers offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

This verse teaches that God values faithful, behind-the-scenes service. The priests prepared the ointment without public attention, yet their work was essential. Believers today can serve God in quiet, ordinary ways, knowing that He sees and honors such labor. It also reminds us to approach worship with reverence and to follow God’s instructions carefully. Every detail of worship matters to Him, and He calls us to serve with care and devotion.

Consider the care and precision required for this task. God did not leave the details of worship to human preference. He gave clear commands, and the priests obeyed. In the same way, our service to God should be marked by humility, obedience, and a desire to honor Him. The verse invites us to dedicate ourselves wholly to His service, trusting that He empowers us by His Spirit.
