1 Chronicles 22:17 (KJV)

King David is near the end of his reign. He has gathered materials and workers for the temple that his son Solomon will build. David himself was not allowed to build it because he had shed much blood in war (1 Chronicles 22:8). Instead, God chose Solomon for this task (1 Chronicles 22:9-10). In this verse, David commands all the princes of Israel to help Solomon. This is a formal, public endorsement of Solomon as the next king and as the one chosen to build the temple. It marks a key moment of transition, ensuring a smooth continuation of God’s purposes for Israel.

The word “princes” refers to the leaders of the tribes and officials of the nation. David’s command is not a suggestion but a clear order. He tells them to help Solomon, saying, and the content of that charge follows in the next verses. The leaders are to support Solomon with their advice, resources, and oversight of the workmen. This command shows that the work of building the temple was not only Solomon’s duty but also the responsibility of the whole nation. The command is not merely administrative; it is rooted in the divine mandate for the temple and the spiritual responsibility of the leaders to support God’s chosen servant.

In 1 Chronicles 22:18-19, David reminds the leaders that the Lord is with them, has given them rest on every side, and has subdued the land. He urges them to set their hearts to seek the Lord and to arise and build the sanctuary. This connection shows that the command to help Solomon is rooted in God’s faithfulness and in the spiritual duty of the leaders. Their support is not merely administrative; it is an act of worship and obedience. The rest God gave them was a sign of His favor, and their response was to be wholehearted devotion.

This verse teaches that godly leaders prepare the next generation. David did not leave Solomon alone; he gave him clear authority and gathered others to support him. In the same way, mature believers should mentor younger ones and encourage them in the work of God. The verse also shows that the work of God is best done together. When leaders unite and share responsibility, the task becomes a collective effort that honors God. Consider how you can support those whom God has placed in leadership. Do you offer your time, skills, or encouragement? David’s command reminds us that building God’s kingdom is a shared calling. Each person has a part, and when we work together, we continue the legacy of faith for the next generation. Let us be ready to help, just as the princes of Israel were called to help Solomon.

Reflect on the leaders in your church and community. How can you come alongside them with practical help and prayer? The princes were not passive observers; they were called to active participation. Your support can strengthen the work of God in your generation. As you seek the Lord, ask Him to show you where your resources and abilities can serve His purposes. Then respond with a willing heart, knowing that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
