2 Chronicles 15:19
And there was no more war unto the five and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa.
2 Chronicles 15:19 (KJV)
Context
The Book of 2 Chronicles records the history of the kings of Judah, and this verse belongs to the account of King Asa. Asa was a righteous king who led the nation in spiritual reform, removing idols and foreign altars and commanding the people to seek the Lord with all their heart (2 Chronicles 15:8-15). The people responded by entering a covenant to seek God diligently, and the Lord gave them rest from their enemies.
Meaning
This verse marks a season of peace: there was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign. The peace was not absolute, for there were ongoing hostilities with Baasha king of Israel (1 Kings 15:16). Rather, it signifies the absence of major foreign wars, a direct result of the nation’s covenant commitment and God’s faithfulness. The verse also sets the stage for the events in 2 Chronicles 16, where Asa later faces an attack from Baasha in his thirty-sixth year, and his response reveals a decline in his reliance on God.
Biblical connections
The peace described here echoes the principle that wholehearted devotion to God brings divine favor and rest. Yet the subsequent chapter shows that peace can be disrupted when later obedience falters. Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life (2 Chronicles 15:17), but in a specific crisis he failed to trust God, reminding us that faithfulness must be continual.
Application
The account of Asa offers several lessons:
Prioritize Spiritual Renewal: Just as Asa removed idols and led the people in seeking God, we should eliminate anything that hinders our devotion to Him.
God’s Blessings: When we are faithful to God and seek Him wholeheartedly, He blesses us with His peace and protection. While this does not mean we will never face physical battles, it assures us of His presence and guidance through challenges.
The Power of Covenant: Asa made a covenant with the people to seek the Lord, and this commitment brought great blessings. We can enter into a covenant relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, and in doing so, experience His peace and victory in our lives.
Reflection
2 Chronicles 15:19 highlights the connection between spiritual renewal and peace. Asa’s dedication to God and the removal of idols resulted in a period of peace for the nation. This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking God wholeheartedly and persevering in faithfulness, for peace can be disrupted when we later falter.
