2 Chronicles 19:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

And what cause soeuer shal come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, betweene blood and blood, betweene Law and Commandement, Statutes and Iudgements, yee shall euen warne them that they trespasse not against the Lord, and so wrath come vpon you, and vpon your brethren: this doe, & ye shall not trespasse. 2 Chronicles 19:10 (KJV)

Context: 2 Chronicles 19 is part of the account of Jehoshaphat, who was the king of Judah. He had recently returned from a military alliance with the wicked King Ahab of Israel, and the prophet Jehu confronted him for doing so. Jehoshaphat then turned his heart back to God and initiated several reforms in the nation.

Call to Justice: In verse 10, Jehoshaphat addresses the judges he appointed throughout the land and instructs them on their responsibilities. He emphasizes the importance of justice and warns them against favoritism, corruption, and unrighteous judgments.

The Importance of Fairness: Jehoshaphat highlights the need for impartiality in rendering judgment. He mentions various causes that may arise among the brethren, such as disputes between individuals or disagreements regarding the law of God. Regardless of the nature of the case, the judges are to ensure that justice is administered fairly and equitably.

Spiritual Consequences: The king reminds the judges that their faithfulness in executing just judgments has spiritual implications. If they fail in the duty and allow injustice to prevail, God’s wrath may come upon both them and their brethren, affecting the entire nation and its relationship with God.

A Warning and a Promise: Jehoshaphat exhorts the judges to fulfill their responsibilities diligently by warning those who are in the wrong, preventing them from trespassing against the Lord. By carrying out their duties with integrity, the judges will avoid transgressing themselves.

Application Today: Although this passage specifically addresses the appointed judges of Jehoshaphat’s time, the principles it conveys are relevant today. It reminds believers of the importance of upholding justice, fairness, and righteousness in personal life and society, calling us to act justly and stand against injustice wherever we see it.

Reflecting God’s Character: God is the ultimate judge, and His character is marked by justice and righteousness. As His representatives on earth, we should strive to reflect His attributes in our interactions and decisions, treating others fairly, seeking truth, and upholding the principles of justice.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 19:10 urges the appointed judges of Jehoshaphat’s time to execute their duties with justice and impartiality. It highlights the importance of fairness in rendering judgments, warns of spiritual consequences for unjust actions, and encourages believers to uphold justice and righteousness, reflecting the character of God, the ultimate judge.
