2 Chronicles 22:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah reigned in the place of the king.”

Context: To better understand this verse, it’s important to consider its historical context. The passage is part of the account of the kings of Judah, specifically during a turbulent period. Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram, had been king of Judah but was killed by Jehu, who was purging the house of Ahab. Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, took control and ruled over Judah for six years. However, during the end of her reign, a son of Ahaziah emerged and assumed rulership.

Athaliah’s reign: Athaliah’s reign was marked by wickedness and idolatry. She was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, and she introduced the worship of Baal into Judah. Her reign was a departure from the faithful worship of God and brought great spiritual decline to the nation.

The seed of Ahaziah: The “seed of Ahaziah” refers to Joash (also known as Jehoash), the son of Ahaziah. He was hidden away by his aunt Jehosheba and his husband Jehoiada the priest, sparing him from Athaliah’s ruthless attempts to eliminate the royal heirs. After six years of Athaliah’s rule, Joash was revealed and anointed as king at the age of seven.

Taking rulership: Joash’s assumption of rulership was a significant turning point for the nation of Judah. His reign brought about a revival of worship and the restoration of the temple of the Lord. Under the guidance of Jehoiada the priest, Joash enacted reforms that aimed to purge idolatry and reestablish the worship of God.
