2 Chronicles 27:1
Jotham was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Jerushah, the daughter of Zadok.
2 Chronicles 27:1 (KJV)
Context
2 Chronicles records the history of the kings of Judah, the southern kingdom. Jotham became king after his father Uzziah, who had leprosy and lived in isolation. Because of this, Jotham likely assumed royal duties before his formal reign. This verse uses the standard royal record formula, giving Jotham’s age, reign length, and mother’s name.
Meaning
Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he ruled sixteen years in Jerusalem. His youth did not prevent him from leading effectively. The mention of his mother Jerushah, daughter of Zadok, highlights her importance and may connect him to the priestly line, since Zadok was a priest. This detail suggests a godly heritage that shaped his character.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 2 Kings 15:33 confirms these same details, supporting the historical accuracy of the record. The Chronicler emphasizes Jotham’s youth and the stability of his reign, which continued the reforms of his father. His reign was prosperous and peaceful, as the following verse notes he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
Application
God works through ordinary historical details such as age, family, and reign length to accomplish His purposes. This reminds believers that God values faithfulness in every stage of life, including youth, and that godly influence can come through family heritage. God can use anyone, regardless of age or background, for His work.
Reflection
Jotham’s example encourages trust in God’s timing and provision. Even when circumstances are difficult, as when a father is incapacitated, God can raise up leaders and bless their obedience. Consider how God may be preparing you for responsibility, even in challenging situations.
