2 Chronicles 27:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.”

Context:Jotham was the son of Uzziah and the king of Judah. He reigned for sixteen years and is generally regarded as a good king who followed the ways of the Lord. This verse serves as a concluding statement regarding Jotham’s reign, stating that the detailed account of his actions can be found in the historical records of the kings of Israel and Judah.

Seeking Historical Context:As mentioned in the verse, the complete record of Jotham’s reign is found in the “book of the kings of Israel and Judah.” This reference suggests that during the time of the Chronicler (the author of the book of Chronicles), there were written accounts documenting the histories of both Israel and Judah, which served as sources for the Chronicler’s work.

Importance of Historical Documentation:The Chronicler highlights the existence of historical records to emphasise the accuracy and reliability of the information presented. It also emphasises the importance of documenting and preserving history for future generations. The inclusion of this verse indicates that there were reliable written sources available to verify the accounts of the kings of Israel and Judah.

Acknowledging the Acts and Ways of Jotham:The verse acknowledges that there were additional acts and accomplishments of Jotham not explicitly mentioned in the book of Chronicles. While the Chronicler provides a summary of Jotham’s reign, it encourages readers to consult other sources to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the king’s achievements and the wars he was involved in.

Seeking Deeper Insights:Although the verse does not delve into specific details, it reminds us of the importance of seeking additional knowledge and understanding beyond what is explicitly mentioned in the Bible. This principle can be applied to our study of Scripture, encouraging us to explore historical, cultural, and contextual aspects to gain a more comprehensive understanding of biblical narratives.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 27:7 serves as a reminder of the existence of historical records and encourages readers to explore additional sources for a deeper understanding of the kings of Israel and Judah, like Jotham, who are mentioned in the Bible. It underscores the value of historical documentation and the importance of seeking knowledge to gain a fuller perspective of biblical events.
