2 Chronicles 27:6

So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God.

2 Chronicles 27:6 (KJV)

Jotham ruled Judah after his father Uzziah, who had been struck with leprosy for intruding into the priest’s office. The chronicler records that Jotham did what was right in the Lord’s sight, yet the people still acted corruptly. This verse summarizes the secret of his strength: he became mighty because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God.

To prepare his ways means Jotham deliberately ordered his life and conduct with God as the witness and judge. The Hebrew phrase “before the Lord” indicates his obedience was open and public, not hidden or casual. His strength was not self-generated; it came from a settled heart that revered God, depended on Him, and sought His direction. This fear of the Lord, joined with humility, made him wise and stable, and it kept him from the evil of self-confidence and pride.

The same principle appears in the life of Nehemiah, who refused to act like others because he feared God. True spiritual strength is found not in self-reliance but in a life consciously aligned with God’s will, lived in His presence.

Believers today can prepare their ways before the Lord by daily committing their plans to Him, walking in obedience, and depending on His grace rather than their own ability. When we live with God as our witness, our character is shaped, and we receive strength that is not our own.

Jotham’s example invites us to examine whether our lives are ordered before God or only before people. True might, in God’s kingdom, belongs to those who humbly prepare their hearts and ways before Him.
