2 Chronicles 27:4
Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah, and in the forests he built castles and towers.
2 Chronicles 27:4 (KJV)
Context
Jotham ruled Judah for sixteen years after his father Uzziah. The Chronicler records that he did what was right in the LORD’s eyes, though the people still acted corruptly. This verse describes his building work in the hill country and forests of Judah.
Meaning
The cities in the mountains provided homes and places for government. The castles and towers were fortified structures that protected travelers, shepherds, and flocks. Such buildings show Jotham’s care for the safety and daily needs of his people. His work also reflected wise planning for the defense and welfare of the kingdom.
Biblical connections
Jotham also repaired the temple gate and the wall at Ophel, as 2 Chronicles 27:3 records. His father Uzziah had built towers in the wilderness (2 Chronicles 26:10), so Jotham continued a family pattern of strengthening the land. The Chronicler later notes that Jotham became powerful because he walked steadfastly before the LORD his God (2 Chronicles 27:6).
Application
Jotham used his position and resources to build and protect what God had entrusted to him. Believers today can show similar diligence in their own responsibilities, whether in family, work, or church. Strategic planning and careful stewardship are good when they serve the welfare of others. This includes using our gifts to create safe and stable places for those around us.
Reflection
Physical defenses are useful, but lasting strength comes from walking in obedience to God. Jotham’s success was tied to his faithfulness. This verse encourages readers to trust in God’s protection while faithfully doing the practical work before them.
