2 Chronicles 35:9

Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.

2 Chronicles 35:9 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of King Josiah’s Passover, a great religious reform in Judah. Josiah repaired the temple, renewed the covenant, and restored worship according to the Law of Moses. The Passover commemorated Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In this chapter, Josiah and his officials had already given generously for the feast. Now Conaniah, his brothers Shemaiah and Nethaneel, and Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, who were leaders of the Levites, also gave to their fellow Levites. Their gift was five thousand small cattle and five hundred oxen for the Passover offerings.

The Levites were chosen by God to serve in the temple, assisting the priests in sacrifices and worship. In this verse, the chief Levites provided animals so that the Levites could slaughter and prepare the Passover sacrifices for the people. This act ensured that the entire community could participate in the feast. The names of these leaders are recorded, showing that their faithful service mattered to God. The large number of animals shows the scale and solemnity of this celebration. The leaders gave willingly, not out of compulsion, to support their brothers in ministry.

The Passover pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who is called the Lamb of God in John 1:29. Just as the Passover lamb’s blood protected the Israelites in Egypt, Christ’s sacrifice delivers believers from sin. The generosity of the Levite leaders also echoes the principle in Exodus 35:5, where God’s people gave freely for the tabernacle. Here, leaders at every level contributed to restore true worship, showing that worship involves both the heart and practical provision.

Believers today can learn from this example. First, we should value remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice through communion, which he commanded. Second, we should practice sacrificial giving, supporting God’s work with our resources. Our giving should reflect love for God and commitment to his purposes. Third, we should work together in unity. The Levites collaborated to provide for the Passover, highlighting the importance of teamwork and shared responsibility within the church. When leaders and members give generously, the whole body is strengthened.

This verse challenges us to examine our own generosity. Do we give cheerfully and sacrificially, as these leaders did? Are we willing to support those who serve us in ministry? The chief Levites did not keep their wealth for themselves but used it to enable others to worship. Their example calls us to consider how our resources can help the church fulfill its mission. May we, like them, give with wholehearted devotion, trusting that God sees and honors our faithful service.
