Ezra 6:9

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail.”

Historical Context: Ezra 6:9 is part of the book of Ezra, which details the events surrounding the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem. It specifically refers to the decree issued by King Darius of Persia, allowing the Jewish people to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem after it had been destroyed by the Babylonians.

  • God’s Provision:

In this verse, King Darius orders that the needs of the priests in Jerusalem be supplied. These provisions include young bullocks, rams, and lambs for the burnt offerings, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil. This demonstrates God’s provision and His care for the spiritual and physical needs of His people.

Worship and Sacrifice: The burnt offerings mentioned in the verse were an important aspect of Israelite worship. These sacrifices symbolized the surrender of oneself to God and the atonement for sin. The provision of these animals for sacrifice emphasizes the importance of worship and the need for proper offerings to be made to the God of heaven.

The Role of the Priests: The verse highlights the role of the priests in Jerusalem who were responsible for carrying out the religious rituals and offering sacrifices according to the law. The priests had the authority to determine the proper quantities of offerings required for worship. They were to be supported and provided for by the people, and the king’s decree ensured that they received what they needed to fulfill their duties.

Faithfulness and Regular Provision: The decree from King Darius emphasized that the provisions should be given to the priests “day by day without fail.” This implies a commitment to regular and consistent provision. God’s people were to be faithful in meeting the needs of the priests, ensuring that they had everything necessary for their service to God.
