“So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.”

Nehemiah 6:15 is a verse that highlights a significant milestone in the book of Nehemiah. To understand its context, let’s provide some background information.

Nehemiah was a prominent figure in the Old Testament, serving as the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia. He received news about the desolation of Jerusalem, its broken-down walls, and the distress of the Jewish people who had returned from exile. Nehemiah’s heart was burdened, and he sought the Lord’s guidance and favour to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Throughout the book of Nehemiah, we witness the challenges and opposition Nehemiah faced as he led the effort to rebuild the walls. In chapter 6, Nehemiah encounters various attempts to distract and discourage him from completing the task. His enemies, including Sanballat and Tobiah, sought to lure him away from Jerusalem, hoping to halt the progress of the wall’s construction.

However, Nehemiah remained steadfast and focused on his purpose. He saw through their schemes and consistently turned to God for wisdom and strength. In Nehemiah 6:15, we read the culmination of Nehemiah’s determination and faithfulness: the completion of the wall.

The verse states that the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, which corresponds to late August or early September on our calendar. The accomplishment is further emphasised by the mention of the time it took to complete the task, which was fifty-two days.

The significance of this verse lies in the demonstration of God’s faithfulness and Nehemiah’s commitment. Despite the opposition, internal conflicts, and the enormity of the task at hand, Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem accomplished the seemingly impossible.

This verse teaches us several important lessons:

Perseverance in the face of opposition:Nehemiah’s determination to complete the wall serves as an example of how we should respond to challenges in our own lives. Instead of being discouraged by opposition, we should remain steadfast and trust in God’s provision and guidance.

Prayer and reliance on God:Throughout the book, Nehemiah exemplifies the importance of seeking God’s wisdom and strength. He consistently turned to God in prayer, acknowledging his dependence on Him. This reminds us to prioritise prayer and seek God’s guidance in our endeavours.

Unity and cooperation:The rebuilding of the wall required the collective effort of the people of Jerusalem. They worked together, each playing a part in the restoration. This highlights the significance of unity and cooperation in accomplishing God’s purposes.

God’s faithfulness:Nehemiah’s successful completion of the wall is a testament to God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. When we align ourselves with God’s will and faithfully pursue His plans, He enables us to achieve what may seem impossible.
