Nehemiah 6:17
Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.
Nehemiah 6:17 (KJV)
Context
Nehemiah served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I. He returned to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls, finishing the work in fifty-two days despite fierce opposition. This verse appears right after the wall’s completion, when enemies saw that the work was done by God. Yet even then, the nobles of Judah kept sending many letters to Tobiah, an Ammonite official who had opposed Nehemiah. Tobiah’s letters also came to them, showing a two-way exchange.
Meaning
The word “many” stresses how frequent and deliberate this correspondence was. The nobles were not merely exchanging greetings; they were sharing information with a known enemy. Tobiah used these letters to advise them in ways that harmed their nation and to send intimidating messages to Nehemiah. This secret alliance reveals that some leaders in Judah had divided loyalties, even after God had given them victory.
Biblical connections
Nehemiah 6:18-19 explains why these nobles sided with Tobiah: he was son-in-law to Shecaniah, and his son had married the daughter of Meshullam. These family ties created a network of obligation that pulled people away from their true allegiance. The enemy’s influence did not stop when the wall was finished; it simply changed its methods.
Application
This verse warns us to examine our closest alliances. Some people appear supportive but quietly work against God’s purposes. We must guard against compromising our integrity through relationships that pull us from our calling. Nehemiah trusted those around him, yet this revelation showed that not everyone shared his commitment. We need wisdom to discern true friends from false ones.
Reflection
God’s work succeeded despite these false friends, proving that it was truly His. Nehemiah’s unwavering dedication allowed him to overcome this hidden threat. We too can remain faithful when we keep our eyes on God’s mission, even when trusted people fail us.
