“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Psalm 1:1 (KJV):Psalm 1:1 (KJV) says, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

1. Context:Psalm 1 is the first psalm in the Book of Psalms, and it serves as an introduction to the entire collection. It presents a contrast between the righteous and the wicked, highlighting the blessings and rewards that come from following God’s ways.

2. Blessed is the man:The psalm begins with a declaration of blessing. The word “blessed” refers to a state of happiness, fulfilment, and well-being. It is a state of spiritual prosperity that comes from living according to God’s principles.

3. Walking in the counsel of the ungodly:The first characteristic of a blessed person is that they do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly. This means they do not seek or follow the advice or guidance of those who are ungodly or wicked. Instead, they seek godly wisdom and guidance from the Word of God.

4. Standing in the way of sinners:The second characteristic is that the blessed person does not stand in the way of sinners. This implies that they do not align themselves with or participate in sinful activities or lifestyles. They strive to live a righteous life, separate from the ways of sin.

5. Sitting in the seat of the scornful:The third characteristic is that the blessed person does not sit in the seat of the scornful. This refers to avoiding association with those who mock or deride godly principles. They do not adopt a mocking or cynical attitude toward spiritual matters, but instead, they embrace a posture of reverence and respect.

6. Practical Application:Psalm 1:1 provides valuable lessons for believers today:

  • – Seek godly counsel: Surround yourself with people who uphold godly values and seek their wisdom and guidance.
  • – Avoid sinful influences: Be cautious about the company you keep and the activities you engage in. Choose to distance yourself from sinful lifestyles.
  • – Cultivate a respectful attitude: Foster a heart of humility and reverence toward God and His Word, avoiding a scornful or cynical mindset.

7. The Way of Blessing:By abstaining from ungodly influences, the blessed person opens themselves up to receive the blessings and favour of God. The subsequent verses in Psalm 1 further emphasize the benefits of delighting in God’s law and meditating on it day and night.
