Psalms 1:1
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psalms 1:1 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 1 opens the Book of Psalms and introduces the whole collection. It contrasts the righteous with the wicked, showing the blessings that come from following God’s ways. The verse describes a downward path: walking in the counsel of the ungodly, standing in the way of sinners, and sitting in the seat of the scornful. This movement shows how a person can slip from casual contact with evil to settled acceptance of it. The progression is deliberate, moving from receiving advice to sharing a lifestyle and finally to adopting a mocking attitude.
Meaning
The word “blessed” means a state of happiness, fulfilment, and well-being. It is spiritual prosperity that comes from living according to God’s principles. The Hebrew form suggests a doubly or thrice blessed state, covering both this life and the life to come. The blessed person does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, meaning they do not follow advice that contradicts God’s truth. They also do not stand in the way of sinners, refusing to share in sinful lifestyles. Finally, they do not sit in the seat of the scornful, avoiding a mocking attitude toward spiritual things. Instead, they seek godly wisdom and live with reverence.
Biblical connections
The structure of this verse parallels the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3, where Jesus also begins with blessings. Both passages teach that true happiness comes from a right relationship with God. The next verse, Psalm 1:2, explains that the blessed person delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on it day and night. This connection shows that avoiding evil is not enough; the heart must be filled with God’s Word. The entire psalm sets the stage for the rest of the Psalter, presenting the two ways of life and their outcomes.
Application
This verse gives practical guidance for daily life. Seek godly counsel from people who uphold biblical values. Be careful about the company you keep and the activities you join. Choose to distance yourself from sinful influences. Cultivate a humble and respectful attitude toward God, avoiding cynicism. These choices open the way for God’s favour and blessing. The progression of sin warns us to guard even small compromises, for they can lead to deeper entanglement.
Reflection
The path of blessing begins with a deliberate refusal to follow ungodly advice. It continues by standing firm against sin and ends with a heart that honours God. As the psalm later shows, the righteous prosper like a tree planted by water, while the wicked face destruction. This verse invites every reader to examine their own steps and choose the way of blessing. It is a call to consider not only our actions but also the influences we allow to shape our minds and hearts.
