“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

Psalm 1:2 (KJV) says: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

Context: Psalm 1 is considered an introductory psalm that sets the tone for the entire book of Psalms. It presents a contrast between the righteous and the wicked, highlighting the blessedness of those who delight in God’s law.

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord”: The psalmist begins by emphasizing the positive qualities and actions of the righteous person. Instead of following the ways of the wicked, the righteous individual finds delight in the law of the Lord. This highlights the importance of finding joy and satisfaction in God’s teachings and commandments.

“And in his law doth he meditate day and night”: The righteous person not only takes delight in God’s law but also meditates on it continuously. This implies a deep and intentional study of God’s Word, allowing it to shape one’s thoughts, actions, and character. Meditating on the law day and night suggests a constant focus and commitment to seeking God’s guidance and wisdom throughout all aspects of life.

The significance of delight and meditation: Delighting in God’s law suggests a genuine love and enthusiasm for His commandments. It goes beyond mere obligation and stems from a heart that desires to align with God’s will. Meditation involves pondering and reflecting on God’s Word, seeking to understand its meaning and implications for daily living. Through meditation, one internalises and applies the teachings of Scripture, allowing them to guide and transform their lives.

The benefits of delight and meditation: By delighting in and meditating on God’s law, the righteous person experiences numerous benefits. They gain wisdom and discernment, develop a deeper relationship with God, and find guidance for making righteous choices. Meditating on God’s Word helps combat the influence of worldly temptations and allows for spiritual growth, leading to a life that is pleasing to God.
