Psalms 6:3

My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord, how long?

Psalms 6:3 (KJV)

Psalm 6 is a penitential psalm attributed to King David. In it, David cries out to God while facing deep anguish and the threat of enemies or illness. This verse sits near the beginning of his lament, where he pleads for mercy before his distress becomes overwhelming.

When David says his soul is “sore vexed,” he means his inner being is greatly troubled. This is not a small worry but a profound emotional and spiritual turmoil. The word “soul” points to the whole person, so his entire being is shaken.

David then turns to God with the question, “how long?” This is a cry for relief and an end to his suffering. It is not doubt or impatience, but an honest plea for God to act. The question appears often in the Psalms, showing that God welcomes our raw cries.

David acknowledges that God is near and accessible. Even in his distress, he believes the Lord hears him. His faith does not remove the pain, but it directs his hope toward the One who can help.

Later in this same psalm, David moves from lament to confidence, declaring that the Lord has heard his weeping (Psalm 6:8-9). This shows that honest prayer can lead to assurance. The verse also points to Christ, who experienced the full weight of human anguish and cried out to the Father, yet trusted His will.

This verse teaches that it is normal for believers to feel deeply troubled. We may face circumstances that shake our souls, but we can bring that anguish to God. Like David, we can be honest about our struggles and persist in prayer, even when the answer seems delayed.

David’s question reminds us to trust God’s timing. We may want immediate relief, but God’s plans are wiser than ours. He works all things for good for those who love Him, and He is present with us in our pain.

When your soul is sore vexed, remember that God is not distant. He is attentive to your cries. You can ask “how long?” and trust that He hears, cares, and will respond in His perfect time.
