Psalms 17:10

Posted on 18 May at 15:18

“They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.”

This verse is part of Psalm 17, which is attributed to David. It is a prayer of David seeking God’s protection from his enemies.

In verse 10, David describes his enemies metaphorically as being “inclosed in their own fat.” This imagery conveys the idea that his adversaries are self-satisfied and indulgent, living in abundance and prosperity. The metaphor of being “inclosed in their own fat” suggests that they are surrounded and consumed by their own wealth and material possessions, resulting in a sense of arrogance and pride.

The latter part of the verse states, “with their mouth they speak proudly.” This indicates that not only are David’s enemies living in prosperity, but they also boast and speak arrogantly. Their words reflect their haughtiness and lack of humility. It suggests that they use their speech as a means of exerting power and dominance over others.

In this verse, David contrasts himself with his enemies. While they enjoy material abundance and express prideful speech, David seeks God’s protection and help. Throughout the psalm, David expresses his trust in God’s righteousness and his reliance on God’s guidance. He appeals to God for deliverance from his enemies who oppress him.
