Context
Psalm 17 is David’s prayer for protection from his enemies. He appeals to God’s righteousness and asks for deliverance from those who oppose him. Verse 10 sits within this prayer, describing the character of his adversaries.
Meaning
The phrase “inclosed in their own fat” is a vivid picture of self-satisfaction and indulgence. In David’s time, fat often represented prosperity and abundance. Here, it suggests that the enemies are so wrapped up in their own wealth and comfort that they have become spiritually dull and hardened. They are trapped by their own excess, unable to see beyond themselves or to care about others.
The second half of the verse, “with their mouth they speak proudly,” shows that their inward pride comes out in their words. Their speech is arrogant and boastful, revealing a heart that does not honor God. This connection between the heart and the mouth is important: proud words come from a proud heart.
