Psalms 29:1

Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength.

Psalms 29:1 (KJV)

Psalm 29 is a hymn of praise from David, celebrating God’s power as seen in a thunderstorm. The opening call, “Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength,” invites all to worship. The word “mighty” (Hebrew gibborim) is understood by scholars as “sons of the mighty” (bene elim), which can mean angelic beings or human rulers. Even the highest created beings must acknowledge God’s supreme authority.

To “give unto the Lord” means to ascribe to Him the honor and power that belong to Him alone. This is not because God lacks glory or strength, but because His people must recognize and declare these attributes. The repeated command stresses the importance of this act. Glory refers to God’s radiant splendor, majesty, and holiness. Strength signifies His power and might. By giving these to God, the worshiper confesses that all true power comes from Him.

The address to the mighty shows that no one is exempt from this duty. Whether angels in heaven or leaders on earth, all are called to humble themselves before God. The psalmist urges them to attribute any strength they possess to the Lord, acknowledging that He is the source of all ability. This recognition leads to surrender of personal pride and dependence on God’s enabling hand.

The call to the mighty echoes Psalm 82:1, where God stands among the “gods” to judge. This connection reinforces that even those with power and influence are accountable to God. The verse also points to Christ, who is the ultimate revelation of God’s glory and strength, and who is worshipped by angels and men alike.

  • Worship and praise: Express adoration, gratitude, and awe for who God is and what He has done.

  • Humility before God: Regardless of status or power, all are called to humble themselves and acknowledge His supreme authority.

  • Recognizing God’s strength: Understand that personal strength is derived from God, fostering dependence on Him.

  • Trusting in sovereignty: By giving glory and strength to the Lord, affirm trust in His rule over every aspect of life.

Psalm 29:1 reminds the faithful to honor and praise God, to recognize His glory and strength, and to surrender to His will. Through sincere worship and humility, believers experience His power and find true strength in Him. The verse sets the tone for the rest of the psalm, which describes the voice of the LORD as powerful and majestic, breaking cedars and shaking the wilderness. This call to worship is both reverent and expectant, recognizing that God alone is worthy of all honor.
