Psalms 31:22

Posted on 18 May at 15:17

“For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.”

Context:Psalm 31 is a psalm of David, in which he expresses his trust in God in the midst of various trials and enemies. Throughout the psalm, David affirms his confidence in God’s protection, deliverance, and mercy.

Acknowledging Hasty Words:In this verse, David confesses that he spoke in haste, expressing a moment of despair and doubt. He believed that he was cut off from God’s presence and His favour. This reveals the depth of David’s emotions and his vulnerability in the face of adversity.

Supplication and Crying Out to God:Despite David’s initial despair, he acknowledges that God heard his voice when he cried out in supplication. David’s prayer reached the ears of God, demonstrating God’s willingness to listen to His people, even in their moments of doubt and distress.

Lessons to Learn:

  • a. Honesty with God:David’s honesty in expressing his doubts and fears before God teaches us the importance of being transparent in our relationship with Him. God invites us to pour out our hearts before Him, knowing that He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
  • b. God’s Faithfulness:Although David felt abandoned, God did not abandon him. The fact that God heard David’s supplications indicates His faithfulness and willingness to respond to the cries of His people. This reassures us that even in our moments of doubt, God is still attentive to our prayers.
  • c. Patience in God’s Timing:David’s confession of speaking in haste reminds us to be patient and not hastily jump to conclusions about God’s faithfulness or our circumstances. God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His timing may not align with our expectations (Isaiah 55:9). We should trust that He is working behind the scenes, even when we can’t see it.
  • d. Perseverance in Prayer:David’s experience encourages us to persistently cry out to God in prayer, knowing that He hears us. God may not always answer immediately or in the way we expect, but we can have confidence that He is attentive to our petitions (Matthew 7:7-8).

In summary, Psalm 31:22 highlights David’s initial hasty words of feeling cut off from God’s presence. However, he recognizes that God heard his prayers and supplications, emphasizing God’s faithfulness and the importance of honest and persistent prayer. This verse encourages us to be open and patient with God, knowing that He listens and responds to our cries.
