Psalms 31:21

Posted on 18 May at 15:17
Listen to this article

“Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.”

Context: Psalm 31 is attributed to David, and it is a heartfelt prayer for deliverance from enemies and distress. It expresses David’s trust in God’s faithfulness and his dependence on Him in times of trouble.

Blessing the LORD: The verse begins with David offering a blessing to the LORD. The act of blessing God acknowledges His goodness, sovereignty, and the praise due to Him. It is an expression of gratitude and reverence towards God.

Marvelous kindness: David declares that God has shown him His marvelous kindness. The Hebrew word for “kindness” can also be translated as “steadfast love” or “loyal love.” It refers to God’s faithful and enduring love, His mercy, and His unfailing goodness toward His people. David recognizes that God has showered him with His loving-kindness in a powerful and extraordinary way.

In a strong city: David acknowledges that God’s marvelous kindness was displayed to him in a strong city. The phrase “strong city” can be understood metaphorically as a place of safety, protection, and refuge. It symbolizes God’s provision and deliverance from his enemies and troubles. David recognizes that God’s loving-kindness is not limited to specific locations but can reach and bless him wherever he is, even in the midst of challenging circumstances.

Application: As we reflect on this verse, we can draw several principles for our lives:

  • Gratitude and praise: Like David, we should cultivate a heart of gratitude and offer blessings and praise to the LORD for His marvelous kindness and steadfast love towards us. It is important to acknowledge God’s faithfulness and goodness in our lives.
  • Trust in God’s provision: Just as David found refuge in a strong city, we can trust in God’s protection and provision. He is our stronghold and a safe place in times of trouble. We can rely on His steadfast love and find comfort in His presence.
  • Recognizing God’s love: We should be attentive to God’s acts of kindness and love in our lives. His loving-kindness is not limited to specific circumstances or places. Even in the midst of difficulties, God’s faithful love can surround us and bring us comfort.
  • Seeking God’s deliverance: In times of distress, we can turn to God in prayer, just as David did. We can ask Him for help, deliverance, and guidance, knowing that He is attentive to our needs and is able to provide for us.

Overall, Psalm 31:21 reminds us of the importance of acknowledging and praising God for His steadfast love and recognizing His provision and deliverance in our lives. It encourages us to trust in Him and seek His presence in all circumstances, knowing that His loving-kindness can sustain us and bring us comfort.
