Psalms 35:7
For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged for my soul.
Psalms 35:7 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 35 is a lament. David cries to God for help against enemies who attack him without reason. He asks God to defend him and to judge those who plot evil against him.
Meaning
The verse uses pictures from hunting. In ancient times, people dug a pit and covered it with branches or dust. They placed a net inside so that an animal would fall in and be caught. David says his enemies have done this to him. They have hidden a net in a pit and dug a pit for his soul, meaning his life. This was a common method for trapping wild beasts, and it shows the secret and crafty nature of their plans.
The words “without cause” appear twice. This repetition shows how unjust the attack is. David has given his enemies no reason for their hatred. Their plans are secret and cruel. They want to destroy him for no good reason. The double repetition makes their sin even clearer, showing that their hostility was deliberate and unprovoked.
Biblical connections
This verse is part of a larger psalm where David calls on God to fight for him. The same picture of a pit appears in Psalm 7:15, where the wicked fall into the hole they made for others. Here, David trusts that God sees every hidden trap and will act in his time. God is the ultimate judge who will vindicate the righteous.
Application
Believers may face suffering that is not their fault. People may oppose them without cause. This verse teaches us to bring such pain to God in prayer. We do not need to take revenge. God knows every secret scheme, and He is the righteous judge. It is right to cry out to Him when we are treated unfairly, and to rest in His justice rather than seeking personal vengeance.
Reflection
When you are treated unfairly, remember that God sees. He is your defender. You can rest in His justice and wait for His deliverance, just as David did.
