Psalms 7:15
He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made.
Psalms 7:15 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 7 is a lament in which David asks God to rescue him from enemies, especially Cush the Benjamite. In this verse, David pictures the wicked as a hunter who digs a pit to trap prey, only to fall into it himself. The image is strong and clear: the very trap meant for another becomes the hunter’s own ruin.
Meaning
The verse uses vivid imagery to show divine justice. The wicked person works hard to harm others, but his plan turns against him. The pit and ditch are the same trap, and the one who made it becomes its victim. This is not luck or chance; it is the outworking of God’s righteous order. The wicked reap what they sow, and their mischief returns on their own heads. God sees every scheme and brings about justice in His time.
Biblical connections
The same truth appears in Psalm 9:15, where the nations sink in the pit they made, and in Proverbs 26:27, which says that whoever digs a pit will fall into it. Ecclesiastes 10:8 also warns that whoever digs a pit may fall into it. The story of Haman in Esther 7:10 shows this principle in action: he was hanged on the gallows he built for Mordecai. Some Jewish interpreters apply this to Saul, who fell on his own sword after pursuing David. These passages confirm that God’s justice is consistent throughout Scripture.
Application
When we face injustice, we can trust God to bring justice in His time. We do not need to take revenge, because God sees every scheme and will deal with it rightly. This verse also calls us to examine our own hearts. We must avoid planning harm against others, knowing that our actions can return upon us. Instead, we should live with honesty and kindness, treating people fairly. Even toward enemies, we are to show compassion and hope for their repentance rather than rejoicing in their downfall. David’s example teaches us to turn to God as our refuge and strength in every trouble.
Reflection
Consider your own words and deeds. Do you ever set traps for others, even in small ways? Ask God to reveal any hidden motives and to give you a pure heart. Rest in the assurance that He is the righteous Judge who will never let evil triumph forever.
