Psalms 7:17

Listen to this article

“I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.”

Psalm 7:17 (KJV) says, “I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.”

Context:Psalm 7 is attributed to David and is believed to have been written during a time when he was facing opposition and enemies. David begins the psalm by seeking God’s deliverance from his enemies and asks God to judge him according to his righteousness. In verse 17, David expresses his response to God’s righteous judgment by praising and singing praise to the Lord.

Praise the Lord:The verse starts with David’s declaration, “I will praise the LORD.” This shows David’s determination and commitment to giving praise and honour to God. Despite the challenges he faced, David’s heart was set on praising the Lord.

According to His righteousness:David acknowledges that his praise is based on God’s righteousness. The righteousness of God refers to His perfect moral character, His justice, and His faithfulness. David recognises that God’s actions are always just and right, and he praises Him for it. Our worship and praise should be rooted in an understanding of God’s righteousness and the knowledge that He always acts in accordance with His character.

Sing praise to the name of the LORD most high:David expresses his intention to sing praise to the name of the Lord. Singing is often used in the Bible as a form of worship and expression of joy and gratitude. David acknowledges God as the “LORD most high,” emphasising His supreme authority and sovereignty over all creation. The name of the Lord represents His character and attributes, and David resolves to sing praise to that name.

Key Lessons:

  • Genuine praise arises from recognising and acknowledging God’s righteousness and justice.
  • Praise is not limited to mere words but involves an active expression, such as singing.

Praise should be directed towards the Lord, who is the most high, acknowledging His authority and sovereignty.

Application:

  • Psalm 7:17 teaches us the importance of praising God in every circumstance, regardless of the challenges we face. Like David, we should focus on God’s righteousness and faithfulness, praising Him for who He is and what He has done. Our praise should not be limited to our words but should also extend to our actions and expressions of worship. Let us make a conscious effort to offer our heartfelt praise to the Lord, honouring His name and recognising His supreme authority in our lives.

Remember, while this study provides insight into the verse, exploring the entirety of Psalm 7 and considering other related passages can deepen your understanding and application of God’s Word.
