Psalms 36:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:25
Listen to this article

How excellent is thy louing kindnesse, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust vnder the shadowe of thy wings. Psalms 36:7 (KJV)

This phrasing is not found verbatim in Psalm 36 in standard translations such as the King James Version.

Psalm 36 begins with a description of the wicked’s transgression and, in verse 5, speaks of God’s loving‑kindness (“Thy lovingkindness, O LORD, is in the heavens; thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds”).

The wording of the quoted line appears to be a paraphrase rather than a direct scriptural quotation.

Psalm 36 does not carry a superscription attributing it to King David; its heading reads “To the chief Musician, on Michtam,” and the author is uncertain.

While the psalm does contrast the wickedness of evildoers with the steadfast love and righteousness of God, it cannot be said that David authored the specific line quoted above.

The Excellence of God’s Lovingkindness:

The opening declaration praises the extraordinary nature of God’s steadfast love.

Phrases such as “how excellent” emphasize the surpassing quality of divine compassion and mercy.

Putting Trust under the Shadow of God’s Wings:

The latter portion uses the familiar biblical image of a bird’s wings providing shelter.

“The shadow of thy wings” conveys God’s protective care for those who seek refuge in Him, suggesting safety and comfort amid life’s difficulties.

Overall, the passage encourages believers to recognize God’s incomparable loving‑kindness and to place their confidence in His protective care.

It invites deeper trust in God’s enduring mercy across all areas of life.
