Psalms 36:3

The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.

Psalms 36:3 (KJV)

Psalm 36 is attributed to David and is often called a wisdom psalm. It contrasts the wickedness of the ungodly with the steadfast love and righteousness of God. In this verse, David describes the character of the wicked person.

The first part says, “The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit.” This means the wicked person’s speech is not merely sinful; it is itself sin. His words are full of lying, bitterness, and corrupt communication. Such speech reveals the corruption of his heart, as Jesus taught that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34).

The second part says, “he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.” This suggests a person who once knew the right path but has now deliberately stopped acting wisely and doing good. It is a description of willful, persistent sin. He has turned away from wisdom, which the Bible defines as the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10).

Within Psalm 36, the contrast is clear: while the wicked flatter themselves in their own eyes (Psalm 36:2), God’s lovingkindness and faithfulness are shown in the following verses (Psalm 36:5-7). This verse warns against self-deception and the danger of a hardened heart.

We should examine our own words, thoughts, and actions. Are our speech patterns characterized by righteousness and truth? Are we actively seeking wisdom and doing good? The verse challenges us to align our language, mindset, and deeds with Scripture, avoiding the path of the wicked.

It also reminds us that we cannot trust in our own goodness. We need God’s grace to keep us from such a state. In a fallen world, believers can find comfort and guidance by trusting in God’s unwavering love and by striving to live in accordance with His truth.

This verse is a sobering reminder that words reveal character. Sin corrupts both speech and conduct. Yet God’s steadfast love is greater than our failures. We can rely on His grace to help us speak truthfully and do good, not in our own strength, but in His.
