Psalms 37:3

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

Psalms 37:3 (KJV)

Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm written by David. It gives practical guidance for living rightly when wicked people seem to prosper. The psalm does not ignore evil, but it teaches a different response: trust in the Lord and continue doing good. This verse stands near the beginning of the psalm and sets the direction for the whole chapter.

“Trust in the Lord” means having confidence in God’s character, promises, and care. It is not passive. Trust leads to action: “do good.” Genuine faith shows itself in obedience, kindness, and justice toward others. The promise “so shalt thou dwell in the land” refers first to the Promised Land of Israel, a place of blessing and security. In a wider sense, it means experiencing God’s presence and provision wherever we live. “Verily thou shalt be fed” assures us that God will meet our needs. Like a shepherd caring for his flock, He provides physical food and also spiritual, emotional, and relational well-being.

The rest of Psalm 37 contrasts the temporary success of the wicked with the secure inheritance of the righteous. This verse encourages us not to envy evildoers but to trust God’s justice and care. The same theme appears in Matthew 6:33, where Jesus teaches that those who seek God’s kingdom will receive what they need. Both passages call for confident trust and faithful action.

When we see injustice or worry about our needs, this verse gives a clear path. We can choose to trust God instead of giving in to anxiety. We can also choose to do good, even when it seems easier to follow the world’s ways. Trust and obedience belong together. As we rely on God and act rightly, we experience His care and find security in His presence.

  • Trust in the Lord: rely on His wisdom, guidance, and faithfulness.

  • Do good: let trust produce obedience and love for others.

  • Dwell in the land: receive the blessings of God’s presence and provision.

  • Verily thou shalt be fed: God faithfully supplies both physical and spiritual needs.

This verse invites us to examine our own response to life’s difficulties. Do we trust God only when circumstances are easy, or do we trust Him in every situation? The promise is sure: those who trust and do good will not be abandoned. God’s care is faithful, and His provision is enough.
