Listen to this article

“Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.”

Context: The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical expressions of worship, praise, and prayer. Psalm 37 is attributed to David and is categorized as a wisdom psalm. It provides practical guidance on how to live a righteous life, trusting in God’s faithfulness despite the presence of wickedness and injustice in the world.

Trust in the LORD: The psalm begins with an exhortation to trust in the LORD. Trusting in God involves having confidence in His character, His promises, and His ability to care for His people. It requires surrendering control and relying on His wisdom and guidance in all circumstances.

Do good: The psalmist encourages the reader to do good, to act righteously and in accordance with God’s commands. It is not enough to trust in the LORD; genuine trust should lead to a life characterized by obedience and upright conduct. This involves actively seeking to live out God’s moral principles and treating others with kindness, compassion, and justice.

Dwell in the land: The phrase “dwell in the land” can have both a literal and a metaphorical meaning. In the literal sense, it refers to the Promised Land of Israel, which was a place of blessing and provision for the Israelites. In a broader sense, it signifies experiencing the blessings of God’s presence and provision wherever one may be. Dwelling in the land implies finding security, peace, and contentment in God’s care.

Verily thou shalt be fed: This phrase speaks of God’s faithfulness in providing for His people. Just as a shepherd cares for his flock, God promises to meet the needs of those who trust in Him. This provision extends beyond physical sustenance to include the spiritual, emotional, and relational well-being of His people.

  • Trust in the LORD: It involves relying on God’s wisdom, guidance, and faithfulness.
  • Do good: Trusting in God should lead to a life characterized by doing good and obeying His commands.
  • Dwell in the land: Living righteously brings about blessings and security in God’s presence, both in a literal and metaphorical sense.
  • Verily thou shalt be fed: God is faithful in providing for the needs of those who trust in Him, encompassing both physical and spiritual aspects.
