Psalms 37:4

“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

Psalm 37:4 (KJV) says: “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

Understanding the Context:Psalm 37 is attributed to David, and it is classified as a wisdom psalm. It provides guidance and encouragement to the reader, reminding them to trust in God and not be anxious about the apparent success of evildoers. The psalm emphasizes the rewards and blessings that come from following God’s ways and remaining faithful to Him.

Delighting in the Lord:The verse begins with an instruction to “delight thyself also in the LORD.” To delight in the Lord means to find joy, pleasure, and satisfaction in Him. It involves developing a deep and intimate relationship with God, where He becomes the source of our joy and the object of our affection. This goes beyond mere obedience; it implies a heartfelt devotion and love for God.

God’s Promised Reward:The verse continues, stating that if we delight ourselves in the Lord, “he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” This promise should not be understood as a guarantee that we will receive everything we desire or ask for. Instead, it speaks to the transformation that occurs when we align our desires with God’s will. As we delight in Him, our desires begin to align with His desires for us. Our hearts are changed, and our desires become centered on His purposes and plans. In this way, God graciously grants us the desires that are in line with His will.

Relationship with God:It is important to note that the verse highlights the importance of the relationship between the individual and God. The focus is not solely on obtaining blessings or fulfilling personal desires, but on deepening our connection with the Lord. When we delight in Him and seek Him above all else, our desires align with His purposes, and He blesses us accordingly.

Application:

  • Prioritize your relationship with God:Make God the centre of your life and find joy in Him.
  • Seek God’s will:Allow your desires to align with His plans and purposes.
  • Trust in God’s timing and provision:Understand that God knows what is best for you and will fulfil your desires in His perfect way and timing.

In summary, Psalm 37:4 encourages us to delight in the Lord and align our desires with His will. As we prioritise our relationship with Him, He promises to grant us the desires of our hearts, transforming our desires to be in line with His purposes. This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s will and trusting in His provision.
