Psalms 37:5

“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Context:Psalms 37 is attributed to King David and is a wisdom psalm. It focuses on the theme of trusting in God’s faithfulness and guidance amidst the apparent prosperity of the wicked. The psalm encourages the righteous to be patient, to trust in the Lord, and to wait for His perfect timing.

Commit your way:The verse begins with the exhortation to “Commit thy way unto the LORD.” To commit our way to the Lord means to entrust our plans, desires, and the course of our lives to Him. It involves acknowledging that God is in control and surrendering our will to His divine guidance. We are to seek His will and align our lives with His purposes.

Trust in Him:The verse continues with the instruction to “trust also in him.” Trusting in the Lord is an essential aspect of the believer’s relationship with God. It means relying on His character, His promises, and His faithfulness. Trusting God acknowledges His wisdom and sovereignty, even when circumstances seem uncertain or difficult. It involves wholeheartedly relying on Him without leaning on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6).

He shall bring it to pass:The verse concludes with the promise that when we commit our way to the Lord and trust in Him, He will bring our plans to pass. This does not mean that everything we desire will be granted, but rather that as we align our desires and plans with God’s will, He will bring about what is best for us. God’s timing and methods may differ from ours, but His faithfulness remains steadfast.

Application:This verse encourages believers to surrender their lives and plans to God, to trust in His guidance, and to patiently wait for His timing. It reminds us that God is faithful and will work things out for our good (Romans 8:28) as we align ourselves with His will. Instead of worrying or trying to control everything ourselves, we are called to cast our cares upon Him and find peace in knowing that He is in control (1 Peter 5:7).

  • In summary, Psalms 37:5 teaches us the importance of committing our lives and plans to the Lord, trusting in His faithfulness, and patiently waiting for His timing. It encourages us to rely on God’s guidance and surrender our desires to His will, knowing that He will bring about what is best for us.
