Psalms 37:12

Listen to this article

“The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.”

Context:Psalm 37 is attributed to David and is a wisdom psalm that addresses the common theme of the prosperity of the wicked and the suffering of the righteous. It provides guidance and encouragement for those who are tempted to envy or be discouraged by the seeming success of evildoers.

Explanation and Analysis:

“The wicked plotteth against the just”: The psalmist observes the schemes and plans of the wicked directed towards the righteous. The wicked often devise plots, schemes, and strategies to harm or oppress those who live uprightly before God.

“Gnasheth upon him with his teeth”: This phrase portrays the wicked’s hostility, anger, and frustration towards the righteous. The image of gnashing of teeth signifies anger, resentment, and a desire to destroy or harm the just.

Key Lessons:

  • The existence of wickedness:This verse acknowledges the reality of evil in the world. It recognizes that there are people who actively oppose righteousness and seek to harm those who follow God’s ways. It is important to be aware of this reality while not losing faith in God’s ultimate justice.
  • The suffering of the just:The verse implies that the righteous may face persecution, opposition, or unjust treatment from the wicked. This aligns with the broader theme of the psalm, which reassures the righteous that their temporary suffering will ultimately be overturned by God’s intervention.
  • God’s sovereignty and justice:Although the wicked may plot and harm the just, this verse reminds us that God is ultimately in control. God sees the actions and intentions of the wicked and will bring about justice in due time. It encourages the righteous to trust in God’s timing and not to take matters into their own hands.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s justice:When facing injustice or opposition, remember that God sees and knows what is happening. Trust in His sovereignty and timing, knowing that He will ultimately bring justice.
  • Avoid envy and resentment:Instead of being envious or resentful of the wicked’s apparent success, focus on your own relationship with God and the blessings that come from walking in righteousness.
  • Pray for your enemies:Jesus teaches us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). Similarly, we should pray for the wicked, asking God to soften their hearts and bring them to repentance.
  • Seek wisdom:Just as David wrote this psalm to provide wisdom and encouragement, seek the wisdom of God’s Word to navigate the challenges of life. Study other portions of Scripture that speak to God’s justice, righteousness, and the blessings of the righteous.

Remember, the overarching message of Psalm 37 is to trust in God, commit your way to Him, and find comfort in His faithfulness, even in the face of wickedness.
